Planning a Trip to Sweden?
Things to know when travelling to Sweden!
Sweden is a beautiful country and makes a fantastic holiday destination or backpacking choice. However, before you go there are a few things to take into consideration – other than just the basics like flight times that is! We sourced a list of all of the important points to plan ahead for on your trip to Sweden, that was compiled based on lived experience.
Budget
The advice for travelling in Sweden is that you budget to spend approximately 420 SEK (or $70 USD) per day to eat, sleep and maintain the usual essentials of life. If you are the type of person who likes to go out to eat often, you can increase that budget by another $20 USD. However, if you are a bigger spender than that you can go as crazy as you like in some of the big cities.
Bear in mind that these prices are city prices, in the countryside they may vary.
Location
Your location may or may not depend largely on your budget. You might find a cheaper hotel or hostel to stay in when you are in the city; but the cost of living while you are there will be higher. You also want to think about the time of year. If you are planning a winter trip then an Alpine city like Are, known for its excellent skiing. Might be better suited than the lower lands. Stockholm is always a great choice for those who are on a short break, but for those who have the time and money we recommend that you tour the country.
Transport
Public transport is easily accessible and reasonably priced in Sweden. The closer you are to a city the easier it is to get around. Bear in mind that if you do go for the snow, there is always a chance you will get snowed in…and since you are there on holiday you can only hope…
Activities and Closing Times
Try to book tickets online wherever possible, particularly if you want to take part in popular events or get into a high-class club. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment if you can – but most of Sweden’s better activities are summarised in the Visit Sweden webpages, so we suggest checking them out long before your trip so that you can plan an itinerary… and you will need to, because there is just so much to see!
The average Swedish workday is 9-4, but that is reduced to 9-2 on a Saturday. If you are inside the city centres then there is a high chance shops and restaurants will be open later. And of course there is night life all night long. Nightclubs can kick out at 2, 3 or 6 in peak season. So be sure to get there before the queues start forming!
Got your adaptors?
Sweden requires a two pin plug and has an outage of around 230/240 volts. If you are coming from America you will need to ensure that your appliances are compatible with this power level. Likewise if you are visiting from the UK you will need an adaptor. They are not expensive and you will kick yourself if you arrive without one!
