A Travel Guide to Sweden – Beginner’s Version

A Travel Guide to Sweden

Welcome to my official Sweden travel guide. This guide is aimed towards giving you an all inclusive guide to Sweden; from traditional to modern and from the south to the very north. Without further ado let’s look at some must-see spots for all you travellers out there.

Stockholm County

This county includes the Capital city if Stockholm with its many sights and sounds. A stones throw from the Baltic Sea, this Archipelago county includes Sodermanland in the south and Uppland in the north. With an estimated population of over 1.8 million sprayed across a 6, 789 squared kilometre area, Stockholm is most people’s first stop.

Uppsala County

Uppsala is County that borders Stockholm, and that is home to Uppsala City; known for its famous 15th century University. Uppsala has the largest Cathedral in any Nordic countries. Knivsta is another city worth visiting in this county, since its Viking heritage and artefacts are well worth a visit. Uppsala has a border with the Baltic Sea and sports the famed Carl Linnaeus Botanical Garden.

Visby – Gotland County

Located to the East and still on the coast is Gotland County, one of many municipalities in Sweden that are not governed locally but who are run by a county council who report back to the government. Visby is the largest area of Gotland, a large town with a population of over 22,000 that is famous for its intact medieval fortifications.

Dalarna County

Dalarna is the original home of the Midsummer Festival. Situated to the northern east of the country, Dalarna is known as the cultural heart of Sweden. Here you can go dog-sledding in winter, participate in some world class Nordic Ski resorts and even visit a few theme parks. With excellent shopping, some weird and wonderful wildlife and plenty of summer activities to boot; Dalarna County is where you will get to the heart of Sweden.

Lund and Malmo province of Skåne

Skane is home to numerous historical sites, all of which you can visit – from consecrated Cathedrals in the port town of Lund to hilltop stone monuments dating back more than a thousand years. You can hike some of the thousand mile Skaneleden Trail for a bit of adventure, or relax on the beaches of the modern Malmo city… you can even visit the bridge that links Sweden with Denmark here.

Norrland County

Norrland County borders the Baltic sea in the east and sits to the north of our other provinces. It is a large land with a small population that is mostly known for its scenery and its University towns.  One of the best thigns to do in Norrland County is to go hiking in Abisko National Park. This is one of the most popular places from whence to watch the Northern Lights in winter.

And that just about concludes my travel guide to Sweden . It is a fantastic destination with lots to offer even if you choose to roam from the attractions of Stockholm. If you are struggling a little to get your head around the County areas then you can find an easy to read map here.
