Things to do in Sweden!
Once you have conquered Stockholm, you start to wonder about what other sights and sounds are out there. When you are looking for some other sorts of things to do Sweden will not disappoint you. It might be a pretty big country with only a few people and huge areas of open space – but that is what makes it so darned interesting! You can do pretty everything from having a quiet Fika break with your close ones in a cosy trendy coffee shop in the city to a full out nature hiking adventure.
So if you want to get the best out of this fantastic country, then pack your bags, fill up your tank and put on your hiking shoes! It’s time to visit some must-see’s!
Strange festivals
Arla, Sweden’s biggest producer of dairy, has a fascinating sight you need to visit. Since Swedish farming is so heavily regulated and there are some odd rules about cows going out to pasture in the summer and some strange festivals associated with it. The annual Koslapp in Arla is where you get to watch the cows dance as they are led out to pasture; and of course there is the accompanying obligatory Swedish Festival to go alongside it!
You can also visit a farm in the region to get a real feel for the inner workings of the agricultural industry in Sweden. The whole experience is a little educational and great for kids – but it’s perfect for soaking up the country culture.
For an alternative (and slightly more active) adventure, then you should hike the Hoga Kusten (or High Coast) Trail. You can do it on your own but there is a sponsored event annually that involves all sorts of stalls and good fun. In 2018 it will take place from 31st August to the 1st September.
You can visit all manner of attractions in and around Stockholm. Pop over to Gamla Stan and walk the old town, see the Royal Palace and have some food; or head out to Skansens Open-air Museum. Tour the Stockholm Archipelago or drive around medieval Visby. You can find some other suggestions for sightseeing here.
Crayfish party
Anywhere in Sweden is great to take in the Midsummer Festival – but one must-see is the Crayfish party! Bback in the early 19th Century the capture of Crayfish was restricted to a few nights in high August due to over fishing. As a result Crayfish turned into a delicacy eaten only in high summer, with good Schnapps and good friends!
A great sight to see is the Oresund Bridge that connects the County of Malmo to Denmark. If you are feeling adventurous you can drive it too – but it’s spectacular no matter what you do there.
When you think of Sweden you think of music – and there are festivals aplenty in the summer. Summerburst is the best known, and features contemporary music. The Swedish Rock Festival features – you guessed it – Rock music, and the Bråvalla Festival being the biggest in Sweden – all you need is a festival for popular western music… oh, wait, they have that. It’s called Way Out West.
